Red and Infrared Light Therapy

Red and infrared light therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to penetrate the skin and promote healing at the cellular level. This non-invasive treatment has been shown to reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and accelerate tissue repair. For pain management, it can help reduce chronic pain by decreasing inflammation and promoting the release of endorphins. The therapy is painless and typically involves sitting or standing near a light therapy device for 10-20 minutes per session. It can be used as a complementary treatment alongside other pain management strategies such a scrambler therapy and PEMF therapy. Pulsed Electromagnetic Frequency Devices

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEMF) uses low-frequency electromagnetic waves to stimulate the body's natural cellular repair processes. It is primarily used to reduce pain and inflammation by directing energy into muscles, bones, and tendons, which can improve circulation and promote healing. PEMF works by acting as a "battery charger" for damaged cells, helping them return to their normal electrical state to function more efficiently. For pain management, it can reduce inflammation, improve circulation, reduce pain and repair cells.

Water Therapy

A broad category that includes hydrotherapy and other water-based treatments such as immersion, contrast baths, and aquatic exercises. It leverages buoyancy, pressure, temperature, and hydrostatic effects to relieve pain, improve circulation, and support rehabilitation. Many patients have experienced postive results incorporating water therapy into a fitness and recovery program. If a salt water pool is available, even better!

Vagus Nerve Stimulation

The vagus nerve runs from the brain to the large intestine and it’s most important role is controlling the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps your body switch back and forth between fight or flight mode and rest and digest mode. Vagus nerve stimulation involves stimulating the vagus nerve (often via an implanted device or transcutaneous approaches) to modulate brain networks involved in mood, anxiety, seizure control, and autonomic regulation. There are a variety of devices on the market for consumers, but with questionable results. There are plenty of free options to stimulate the vagus nerve.

Drugs and Medications

Often requires a multimodal treatment approach as different medications can help target different aspects of the condition. Analgesics (including NSAIDs and acetaminophen) may relieve mild pain, while more targeted options like nerve-blocking medications (gabapentinoids such as gabapentin and pregabalin) and antidepressants (tricyclics or SNRIs) can reduce neuropathic pain and improve function. Topical agents (lidocaine patches) and topical lidocaine or capsaicin may provide localized relief. Some have experienced positive results managing pain sympoms with marijuana, THC and CBD products.

Important Considerations

While Calmare®/Scrambler Therapy can be beneficial for managing chronic pain, it's important to remember that every patient's situation is unique. What works well for one person may not work as effectively for another.

Before Starting Any New Treatment:

Consult with your healthcare provider to ensure the treatment is safe and appropriate for your condition

Discuss potential interactions with your current medications or treatments

Research qualified providers and facilities that offer the treatment

Understand the costs involved and whether your insurance provides coverage

Set realistic expectations and give treatments adequate time to show results

Many patients find that a multimodal approach combining several complementary treatments provides the best results. Some of these therapies can be used alongside Calmare®/Scrambler Therapy to enhance overall pain management and improve quality of life.
